A desert of white dunes and blue lagoons

Why Lençóis Maranhenses

It looks impossible: a vast sheet of brilliant white dunes, and cradled between them, thousands of rain-fed lagoons in impossible blues and greens. Lençóis Maranhenses is one of Brazil's most surreal landscapes.

We time it to the lagoons, arrange the 4×4s from Barreirinhas, and find the dunes where you can swim, watch the sun set and see a sky thick with stars.

  • Turquoise rain lagoonsCrystal pools you can swim in, set among the dunes.
  • Endless white dunesA 'bedsheet' of sand stretching to the horizon.
  • Sunset from the dunesThe classic golden-hour climb for the view of a lifetime.
  • 4×4 adventuresReach the park across rivers and tracks from Barreirinhas.
  • StargazingSome of Brazil's darkest, clearest night skies.

The dunes are soft sand reached by 4×4, genuinely challenging terrain. We'll be honest about what's feasible and arrange the best possible experience for each traveler.
